Casino Security

In the 1950s, Nevada’s casino industry began to grow, as casinos flooded the region. Legitimate businessmen were hesitant to enter the business, but organized crime figures, with their large pots of cash from illegal rackets, had no problem getting involved. Mafia money poured into Reno and Las Vegas casinos, and some of them even became personally involved, threatening staff and patrons. While the situation has changed somewhat, casino security remains an important concern.

To counteract the risk of a casino becoming a haven for shady characters, casinos have implemented elaborate surveillance systems. The cameras hung high above the casino floor are trained to watch patrons and games at all times. Dealers and pit bosses keep an eye on the table games to ensure that patrons are not cheating. These employees also check betting patterns and look for any suspicious behavior.

The United States currently has over 1,000 casinos, and that number is increasing. The number is expected to keep growing, especially as more states seek to legalize the business. At present, there are more than 900,000 slot machines in the United States. The Las Vegas Valley has the highest concentration of casinos in the country. The Atlantic City, New Jersey region ranks second, and the Chicago region ranks third.

In addition to the games, casinos also offer other amenities. Prime dining and beverage facilities and performance venues are often attached to the gaming floors. Many casinos feature different types of entertainment and even host the World Series of Poker.
